The Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) has, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Department of Human Settlements, launched a city-wide housing needs analysis survey to establish an empirical baseline to determine actual housing demand, spatial preferences, affordability profiles and specific tenure requirements across the municipality.

The survey will run across all seven city regions – Regions A to G – from August 4 to 30.

“Housing planning cannot be predicated on assumptions. We must accurately evaluate where our communities reside, where they work, what financial resources they command and the exact typology of shelter they require. This survey accords residents a direct voice in shaping the city’s future housing pipeline," says Joshco acting CEO Katlego Ditshego.

He emphasises that the survey is a strategic spatial planning tool rather than a housing application, waitlist registration or unit allocation exercise. Participants can specify needs ranging from social and affordable rental units to first-time homeownership options and student housing across all seven administrative regions.

To guarantee equitable access and eliminate digital exclusion, participation is structured through multiple channels, including an online portal; dedicated walk-in centres at Joshco regional offices and CoJ Human Settlements customer centres; and scheduled regional field visits and ward councillor distribution networks to assist residents without smart devices or data connectivity.

“Our goal is to ensure no one is left behind. We encourage residents across Johannesburg to take part in the Housing Needs Analysis Survey and make their voices count in shaping the city's future housing priorities,” Ditshego says.
